NEW POLITICAL MOVEMENT EMERGES, SEEKS A TOTAL OVERHAUL OF NIGERIA’S POLITICAL CULTURE

The Nigerian political scene since the advent of the 4th Republic has witnessed lots of regenerations, political alignments and realignments. As at this moment, none seems to have taken the far reaching revolutionary measures that can guarantee the real positive change that will galvanise the populace to seek and realise the dreams of the average Nigerian.

As the 2027 electioneering campaigns are about to formally kick off, more realignments are taking place, but some Nigerians are still on the side studying the scene and taking notes as events unfold. Others are not so impressed and are seeking to move totally away from what they call ‘the lethargic and dysfunctional systems’ of political associations that are seemingly pervading Nigeria.

Some of these last sets of people have elected to form their own groups and this action has now given birth to a new group that intends to metamorphose into a political party in the nearest future.

The group is known as the ‘Reform Movement’, its intention is to create a political ideology that is based squarely on the principles of fairness, firmness, proportionality and justice.

The man who spearheads this group is a businessman of repute- a maritime trucking business operator, hotelier and farmer whose passion for all things Nigeria is completely hinged on having a level playing field on all sectors of the country’s everyday activities. He is Kevin Chinedu Okechukwu.

Mr. Okechukwu is a 1999 graduate from the department of Geography, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He attributes the driving force behind his desire for change to his unhappiness with the undesirable and abnormally toxic political environment that has been created by professional politicians who have little or nothing to contribute to Nigeria’s general upliftment.

Mr. Okechukwu spoke to journalists at a press briefing, Wednesday afternoon as he announced the birth of the new political association, ‘The Reform Movement’.

He noted that he does not feel like any of the existing political parties has what suits his ideology as well as those of many other Nigerians, this he said has given rise to the urge by people like him to start from a different kind of political platform on which to propagate their ideology.

According to Mr. Okechukwu “a lot of us are tired of the lack of proper political ideology. I am not interested in contesting any political office in 2027, maybe from 2031, but I am truly focused on building a new political movement with different ideology and orientation for now. I intend this movement to transform over time into a political party and into one that should positively impact the whole political terrain”.

His words “our society has been largely affected by lack of discipline, corruption yes, but indiscipline has had the most negative impact on our national life”.

While fielding questions, Mr. Okechukwu who is an indegene of Anambra State said that he believes that the country needs political reform as well as the reform of the Justice system. He noted that the rate of convictions and quick dispensation of Justice needs to be expedited.

“According to statistics, Nigeria has a population of about 240 million people, but just about 80,000 of this figure is in incarceration. 30,000 persons of these are really convicted leaving about 50,000 inmates on awaiting trial and probally innocent victims of a failed system”.

He added that “this figure is low as compared to the general population. A lot of persons who who should be in jail are walking and operating freely all over the country, some are even holding political offices. We need to completely overhaul the Justice system and rather quickly too”

He admonished that people should know the difference between right and wrong, do the right thing leaving the wrong or be punished accordingly for their bad deeds. We need more court rooms, police stations and jail houses to put away criminal elements in the society .

Mr, Okechukwu advised that Government exists for the security and welfare of the citizens and so they should put all the amenities required by the people in place in commensurate proportions.

On the little matter of zoning of political offices, the businessman and aspiring politician said that some political parties try to zone their offices to have a fair distribution of these political offices along different considerations, but that what matters most is the quality of the persons in office.

“The Reform Movement intends to gather people of like minds in order to achieve the stated objectives of transforming the country from the current level of underdevelopment to a vibrant developed nation that it ought to be”, Okechukwu concluded.
